There was nothing visibly wrong with this tire until it decided to do its best snake impression and shed its skin on the interstate. That was fun. Now it’s safe to assume all four are bad, and I have to replace them on a budget of exactly nothing. Can i just stop being an adult for a while? Please?

My van came with Kumhos, and I haven’t been thrilled with their performance for the price, to say the least. Although I haven’t seen failure like that. That is the definition of a warranty claim.
I took the advice I got here and switched to Altimax.

What size are they?

That’s unfortunate . How old were they? The photo looks to have some small cracks in other parts of the rubber , which would suggest a dry-rotting tire from UV exposure over time.

S urprisingly, not the size that was recalled for tread separation. I don’t remember the exact size off-hand, though.

It may be dry-rotted a bit, but I'm not sure how old they are. They were on the truck when I got it about two months ago.

That is an excellent assumption, please do.

As far as I know, no. I’m sorry.
Please?
I said I was sorry! :c

Check the date code, if the are getting close to 10 years old they should probably get replaced. The tread depth looks quite okay though so maybe it is just that one tire.

Date codes?

Should be something like this on the tire sidewall :
If not, then your tires are definitely too old.
Either way, yeah I don’t think I would trust the others, unless the failed one is significantly older or obviously more cracked.
Sucks, but an unavoidable part of car ownership.

I don’t trust a company that would call themselves Kum Ho. Talk about inappropriate language...
(wait am I
the only reading it like that?)

I’ll check in the morning. I don’t think they're terribly old, though.

never seen a kumho do that

Most Kumho tyres are decent yet mundane. Frequent fitment on Korean cars and more than a few trucks. My guess is that these are on the aged side though.
I have had a couple of sets of them with the second set being binned late in life after one formed a bubble in the sidewall.
The only tyre I’ve run that did that particular demolition was less than 2000 km old when I watch a strip of tread fly off into the scrub after dancing down a stony road... can’t recall if it was a Dunlop or a Bridgestone but it was an OE fit and of those six original tyres (2 spares straight from the dealer !). ..none survived more than 5,000 km. Even a good tyre out there only lasted 30,000 km...

We start recommending tires at six years old. Different tire manufactures recommend different ages, six being the shortest IIRC. I think the longest is ten years, aside from one that gives no age guidelines. We just play it safe to prevent this.

Try craigslist or FB marketplace place.
I have picked up a number of tires and rims cheap. Just recently picked up a set for my k1500 for $75. Fronts had good tread but off brand. Backs are 8-9 /32 Goodyear Wranglers. By them selves, one is more than $75 used.
Also you might be able to get away with older c/k tires and rims with an offset/spacer. Just need it to get past the hub IIRC, the Colorado hub is bigger

Yeah, turns out they're ten years old. Due for a replacement regardless, I guess.

Related: when I bought my truck, the collective wisdom was that the tires were about 40 years old. They were “fine” but yeah, I replaced them. And now they’re on a friend’s yard-plow-jeep for... probably eternity.

On the plus side, it's a RWD pickup.... I can have a little fun with them the morning before I replace them.

Yard plow is one thing. On the highway is a completely different thing.

Ten years old?! You lucked out. Could’ve been way worse. Glad it was a minor inconvenience and you’re ok!

Yeah, and February of ‘09 at that (The code was 0908)! I was in middle school when these tires were made, and they still have three times as much tread as the 3-year-old one I picked up at the junkyard today.
It’s a good thing I decided to buy a whole wheel to have a full-size spare, too, because the donut had never been used before this and it came with the truck in '04, so it's presumably at least 16 years old now. Not to mention it spent its whole life collecting road salt in Michigan along with the rest of the undercarriage. I'm surprised the rim didn't just buckle when I let the jack down.
